Birmingham is my home town. We have taken this piece of our local history for granted. Extensive work was done to restore the pedestal to it’s original form. At some point, the pedestal was completely concreted-in. The concrete started aging, so work began on the restoration. But, I’m sure you saw this in the tour. However, something you may not be aware of: the statue was turned slightly so that Vulcan’s bare butt would not face the City of Homewood, directly to the south. It was always a point of contention for the two cities.
