Our Wednesday accidentally turned into a lazy day. We had planned to hit the road and see some sights today, but due to a number of people sleeping in, that didn’t work out. That’s okay…we’re flexible!

At one point in the morning, PK walked over to the big table where Mallory was, sat down, and I overheard this exchange:
PK: Would you like to play Rummikub?
Mallory: Sure
PK: Well, I have it right here (she leans over and grabs the bag out of her stroller, and dumps it on the table)
Everybody: Hahahahaha

For lunch, it was decided that we should try another local Michigan delicacy – the Pasty. (pronounced past-ee) It is essentially a hand-held pastry filled with meat – a portable pie.
Scott, Erin, Stephanie and I drove into Escanaba and grabbed lunch at Dobber’s Pasties. You can buy them fresh or frozen, and we opted to grab a half dozen different fresh & hot pasties that we would share back at the house. Dobber’s had a large “Yooper” flag on their wall. When in the U.P., you learn that a Yooper is how you say U.P.’er.

I think the overall feeling was that they were “fine”. Some were a little better than others, and we compared them to similar portable pies we’ve had over the years (empanadas, juicy patty, etc).
After lunch, we dedicated ourselves to finishing the Mexican Train Dominos game we started on Monday. This is truly one of my favorite games, and I think that sentiment is shared by many in the family. The house also had an old-fashioned popcorn machine, and Erin fired up a batch of fresh popcorn to enjoy during gameplay. Yum!

After the game ended, we had a “Dance Break”, which was made even more enjoyable with Scarlett reappearing from her nap.

We next moved out to the Rapid River in the backyard. The water was pretty cool, but not overly. The riverbed was solid rock, which made for a pretty unique experience.

Next up was a beach visit in Escanaba. Miles, Stephanie and I went for a quick run along the waterfront, while Peyton & Scarlett & Mallory & Ellery splashed around in Little Bay de Noc, part of Lake Michigan.

Back at the house, we spent our evening having a King Family Ladderball tournament. It was a lot of fun, and in the end, Peyton was the deserving champion!

The evening wrapped up with a few minutes around the campfire, which Stephanie so lovingly started and nurtured.

We never got too far from home base, but today turned out to be a Grade A Vacation Day!
